The brain computer interface has been the topic of a lot of pop-culture prophecies, including the likes of Ghost in the Shell, the Borg and the Matrix. However, what if it's sooner that we realize? Read on.

Internet of Human. Researchers have linked a human brain to the internet for the first time ever. 

If you think the smart speaker is the culmination of IoT in a voice-first AI world, you got it wrong. In the mid to late 2020s the brain computer interface (BCI) is the device of choice and it's already making significant leaps and progress.

There's now significant interest in BCI as we start to realize in an IoT it's entirely possible. This week a team of researchers in South Africa at Wits University in Johannesburg appear to have made a breakthrough.

They call it Brainternet, the first time ever researchers have devised a way of connecting the human bring to the internet in real time.

In the AI-of-everything humans must embrace a new state according to transhumanists like Elon Musk who started Neuralink. Suffice to say that brain controlled technology (BCT), is about to have a golden era.

According to the release published in Medical Express, EMOTIV have an EEG head-gear device, that according to Adam Pantanowitz signals a milestone.

Brainternet is a new frontier in brain-computer interface systems.

There's going to be no lack of competition. There are some very serious companies that will throw a lot of money at this problem, because the rewards are nothing short of paradigm altering. Don't be surprised if Softbank and Tencent aren't into this already in stealth labs.

Why the Brain Computer Interface Matters

In a world of self-driving cars, robots and voice-AI, the BCI is a faster way of communicating and an important step in a "master-control" of our increasingly fluid and embedded world.

It's the spark of our humanity in our smart cities that will be increasingly automated by AI and robots.

Neuro biofeedback is all fair and well, but the utility comes with next devices where drones, instant messaging, real-time events and empathy itself are all conveyed by thoughts themselves over the web.

As machine intelligence begins to understand language better, simultaneously we'll be starting to invent less invasive ways of how a new human-interface to the web could work that links us to the web more directly.

As fake news, online trolling, identity theft, cyber fraud, hacking and the abuse of our privacy in a web ruled and abused by advertising tech companies can attest to, the web is still in its infancy.

BCIs will enable us to humanize the web and also help us interact with each other and smart devices more efficiently.

To keep up with AI, humans will have to remove the bottleneck of how we input and process information and social connection on the web.

The BCI, like blockchain or quantum computing, is an important step of the 4th industrial revolution that we are about to enter.
